IPTV Player Activation: MAC Address and Device Key Explained

Four of the most common players on smart televisions will not show you anything until you have registered them, and the television itself cannot do it. This is the single most misunderstood step in IPTV, and it has nothing to do with your subscription.

What is actually happening

When you open IBO Player, Bob Player, CR7 Player or Hot Player for the first time, it shows two things on the television: a MAC address, which identifies that device on your network, and a device key. Neither is anything to do with us or with your line. They are how the publisher of that application ties a licence to that one television. Until you have registered them on the publisher's own website, the application will refuse to load a line, and the message it shows rarely explains why. People conclude their subscription is broken. It is not.

The four steps, in order

  • Install the player on the televisionFrom the set's own store. On Samsung and LG this is the only route, and if one of the four is missing another is usually present.
  • Open it once and write down what it showsA MAC address, in the form of six pairs of characters, and a device key. Photograph the screen rather than copying by hand; a single wrong character produces a failure with no useful message.
  • Register them on the publisher's siteFrom a phone or a computer, on the site belonging to that application. This is where a device licence is issued, and it is separate from anything to do with your provider.
  • Reopen the player and add your lineNow it will accept a playlist address or a portal login. Set the time zone by name at the same time, and the setup is finished.

What goes wrong, and what it means

  • The player says it is not activatedThe registration has not gone through, or it went through against a different address. Reread the MAC from the screen and compare it character by character.
  • It worked, then stopped after you changed televisionExpected, and the most expensive surprise in this whole subject. The licence follows the device, not you. A new set means registering again.
  • You registered the router's address by mistakeThe address you need is the one the application shows, not one from your network settings. They are different, and only one of them works.
  • The player loads but the catalogue is emptyNow it is a line question rather than an activation one, and our free tools will tell you which in under a minute.
  • You want to avoid all of this next timeUse a player you simply paste a line into. On Android, Fire TV and Apple hardware, nothing needs registering at all.

Players that need no activation at all

If the television is not the constraint, this whole page becomes unnecessary. These take a line directly and tie nothing to any device.

TiviMate

Android and Fire TV only: there is no version for Samsung or LG, and no version for iPhone. It reads plain M3U, M3U with group and logo tags, and the Xtream Codes API directly. Its one genuine trap is that unlocking the premium tier is done through a separate companion application on an Android phone, because a Fire TV Stick has no Play Store of its own.

Accepts M3U, M3U8 and the Xtream Codes API, and also reads WebDAV and FTP sources, which is unusual. The clearest platform requirements of any player here, because the App Store states them outright.

The exception in this list: it is not downloaded, it comes with the hardware. It also accepts the widest range of line formats of anything here, including the MAG style portal that older set top boxes use, which is why a Formuler box is often the answer when a line will not go anywhere else. Its named features include Game Day, pinned groups, global search, timeshift, recording, picture in picture, and backup and restore.

MAG boxes and the portal they expect

A MAG box, and the many boxes built to behave like one, does not take a playlist and does not take an Xtream login. It expects a portal address entered in the box's own settings, and it identifies itself to that portal by its MAC address, which is printed underneath the box. That is a third mechanism, separate from the two above, and confusing it with them is the reason a great many MAG owners believe their line is broken when it is simply in the wrong shape. MYTVOnline 3 on a Formuler box speaks all three, which is why it is the usual recommendation for anyone who has collected devices over the years.

Once a player is registered, the next question is always whether the line itself is sound. These read any line from any provider, ours included, without an account.

Activation questions

Why does my player ask for a MAC address?
Because that publisher issues its licence per device, and the MAC is how it recognises the television. It is unrelated to your subscription and unrelated to us.
Where do I find the MAC address and device key?
On the television screen, the first time you open the application. Photograph it rather than copying it by hand.
Can I activate the player on the television itself?
No. The registration page is opened on a phone or a computer. Looking for a way to do it with the remote is the most common waste of time in this process.
I changed my television and it stopped working. Why?
The licence is attached to the device rather than to you, so a new set needs registering again. If that matters to you, choose a player you simply paste a line into instead.
Do your lines work with these players?
Yes, with all of them, and with the MAG style portal too. There is no application of ours on any platform and nothing of ours stays behind if you leave.
Is activation the same thing as a subscription?
No, and confusing the two is the root of most of the frustration here. One is a licence for the application; the other is the line that gives it something to show.
