How the search works, and why it is not instant
An Xtream Codes panel has no search. It can list its folders cheaply, and it can open one folder at a time, and that is the whole of what it offers. So the search is built in two passes.
- The folder names firstPanels file channels under names
that say what is in them, nearly always a country followed by a subject:
UK | SPORTS,FR | CINEMA,AR | NEWS. Those names are read once, in a single request, and scored against what you typed. - Then the likeliest folders are openedTen of them, best first, one request each. Their contents are searched for the same words.
- And you decide whether to go furtherA line can hold nine hundred folders. Opening them all would be nine hundred questions to your provider's server for one search, which is a scan rather than a search. The page says how many it opened and lets you add more on purpose.
Names in the wild are shouted and padded. The same channel
can be written AR: SPORT ONE HD |FHD| on one panel and
Sport 1 on another. Both sides are flattened before comparing,
and the quality markers that mean nothing to a search, HD, FHD, 4K, VIP,
backup, are set aside.
What people usually look for
A subscription is nearly always bought for one particular thing, and dropped when that one thing turns out to be missing. If your line does not carry what you need, it can be perfectly active and still be the wrong line. These are the four kinds of search that come up.
A sports channel
The most common reason a subscription is bought, and the most common reason one is dropped. Sport is also where providers differ most: two lines at the same price can carry completely different competitions. Search the exact wording your match is listed under.
A film or a series
Films and series do not sit among the channels. They live on their own shelves, in folders by genre or by language, and they are searched by title rather than by channel name. A result on the film shelf usually carries a year and a rating beside it.
A channel in your own language
The everyday reason somebody keeps a subscription: the national channels of the country they come from. These are filed under a country label, so searching the country name on its own shows you the whole shelf at once.
Something for the children
Children and documentary folders are the first to be thinned out on a cheap line, which makes them the quickest way to tell a full catalogue from a trimmed one. If those folders are thin, the rest usually is too.
Questions about looking for a channel
It found nothing. Does that mean my line does not have it?
It means the folders opened so far do not have it. The folders most likely to hold it were tried first, so a channel that is not in them is probably not on the line at all, but you can open more and be certain.
Why not just search everything at once?
Because every folder is a separate question to your provider's server, and a large line holds hundreds. Asking all of them for one search would be indistinguishable from scanning the panel, and would take minutes rather than seconds.
Can I look for a film or a series?
Yes. The same search runs across the live, film and series shelves, and every result says which shelf and which folder it came from. Films often carry a year and a rating, which is shown beside the name.
Does it work with a provider other than yours?
Yes, with any panel running Xtream Codes or one of the systems that copy it. You need your own username and password, so you can only search a line you already hold.
The channel is there but named strangely. Will it still be found?
Usually. Names are compared after both sides are flattened, so punctuation, capitals and quality markers are ignored. Two or three plain words will find the same channel written in capitals, padded with HD or FHD, and wrapped in bars and colons.
Is anything played or downloaded?
No. The search reads folder listings and nothing else. No stream is opened at any point, which is why it is quick and why it costs your provider almost nothing.
