What makes the MAG Box different

This is a third mechanism, separate from the two that every other page here describes, and confusing them is why a great many MAG owners believe their line is broken when it is simply in the wrong shape. The sequence is also reversed: on every other device you receive a line and enter it. Here you give your MAC address to the provider first, they attach the line to it, and only then does the box find anything. The same applies to the many boxes built to behave like a MAG without carrying the name.

Step by step on a MAG Box

  • Find the MAC address underneath the boxSix pairs of characters, printed on the label. It is also in the system settings if the label has worn away. Photograph it.
  • Send that MAC address to your provider firstNothing works until the line has been attached to it. This is the step that reverses the usual order, and skipping it is why the box shows nothing.
  • Enter the portal address in the box settingsSettings, then System settings, then Servers, then Portals. Give it a name and paste the portal address your provider gave you.
  • Restart the portal, not just the boxThere is a specific restart option in the menu. A cold power cycle sometimes reloads the old configuration instead.
  • Set the time zone by nameIn the same system settings. A place rather than a number of hours, so it follows the clock changes.
  • Test at your normal viewing hourAnd use the cable socket. These boxes are usually placed behind a television where wireless is weakest.

The three mistakes we see most on this device

  • Trying to use a playlist addressIt will never work, and no setting changes that. Ask your provider for the line as a portal instead of converting it.
  • Giving the wrong MAC addressThe one that matters is printed under the box, not one from your router or your network settings. They are different addresses.
  • Changing the box and expecting the line to followThe line is attached to a MAC address. A new box means a new address, and the provider has to attach it again.

A named zone carries its own clock changes. An offset in hours does not, so a setup that is correct today will be an hour wrong after the next change.

Let the catalogue finish loading

A large catalogue takes a moment on first open. A player that looks frozen is often just reading, and forcing it closed then is what corrupts the profile.

Change one thing at a time

Player, then network, then device. Change three at once and you will never know which mattered, so you will do it all again next time.

One device plays at a time

The line can move freely between devices, but only one plays at once. Extra screens are separate accounts at a reduced rate, and we say so here rather than after you have paid.
